Annecy market: fresh food at Old Town Market

Travel to Annecy on a Friday morning and you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Sprawling across the cobbled streets of old town is the Old Town Market – a riot of cheerfully colored macarons, shiny bowls of marinated olives, and all the fresh produce seasonally available. Bring cash, reusable shopping bags, and your appetite.

How to get to Annecy’s market

Make your way into old town (which is very small) and it’s hard to miss the multi-street sprawl of aromatic coffee vendors, colorful veggie stands, and sugar-dusted pastries.

When to go

The market is held Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. We went on a Friday and it was bustling and gorgeous. I’ve heard Sunday is also large and packed while Tuesday is smaller and mostly featuring produce.

What to expect

Fresh produce, jams, cheeses, meats, baked goods, nuts, herbs, olives, eggs, macarons.

Language

The official language here is French, but you’ll find that some vendors speak English and others are more than willing to communicate through nods and pantomimes.

What (else) to do in Annecy

Wander the adorable streets of old town, and then take a walk alongside the lake. Everywhere we wandered was absolutely stunning.

If you’re exploring the region, my two favorite restaurants in nearby Grenoble are Troquet les Mouettes and La Ferme à Dédé.
